A late Spring in the Beartooths.

Here is a view of Lake Fork of Rock Creek taken from the Lions Beartooth Mountain Youth Camp bridge on May 9th. Snow still lies in shaded places and where it was drifted. The ground is still frozen at least two feet down. Spring is slow coming this year but work has begun to open the camp.

The trees and bushes have not leafed out yet and few flowers are blooming, but the promise of spring is just around the corner. The topsoil is thawing during the day and the frost underground is being slowly reduced from above and below. It may only be a week or so and things will appear much greener. The frost has burned off leaving a thin layer of tender green grass in sheltered places. The day was a mix of sun, rain and snow. The drifts barely thawed but it still felt like spring.
